The head of one of the country's most politically active unions acknowledged today that some of his rural members in key voting states fear casting a ballot for an African-American for president.
Gerald McEntee, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, used colorful language to describe racist attitudes against Obama as well as where union workers would find themselves if they don't win in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Michigan.

NATO foreign ministers gathered in Brussels on Tuesday August 19th for an emergency summit, called by America, to discuss what to do next about Georgia and Russia. The military alliance gave warning that “we cannot continue with business as usual” until Russia withdraws troops from Georgia. NATO also pledged to deepen ties with Georgia by setting up a NATO-Georgia Commission. Russia and America have cancelled plans for joint military exercises.

Quentin Tarantino, the master of bloodbath cinema, is to give his trademark comic-book treatment to the Nazis and the second world war in a film that has stirred controversy even before production has begun.
Shooting on the film, which has the working title Inglorious Bastards and which Tarantino has described as an "in-your-face movie", is due to start in the Potsdam Babelsberg studios west of Berlin on October 13.
